Joseph Fung

Joseph Ka Cheung Fung was born in Hong Kong. He moved to England intending to study the natural sciences, but subsequently undertook formal musical training. He graduated in guitar performance and music from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester in 1979, where his principal teachers included Gordon Crossley and John Williams.

After an additional year at the college, he was appointed in 1980 to a teaching position at Tónskóli Sigursveins D. Kristinssonar in Iceland, where he worked for four years. During this time, he was active as a performer in concert, radio, and television in both England and Iceland, presenting solo repertoire as well as his own compositions and arrangements.

At the time of the mid-1980s, he was studying composition with Ton de Leeuw at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam.
