Áskell Jónsson

Áskell Jónsson was born on April 5, 1911, at Mýri in Bárðardalur. In 1943 he was appointed music teacher at Gagnfræðaskólinn á Akureyri and conductor of the Karlakór Akureyrar. He taught at the school until 1974 and conducted the male choir until 1966.

Together with Björgvin Guðmundsson, Áskell conducted Kantötukór Akureyrar at the Nordic Choral Festival in Stockholm in 1951. Under Áskell’s direction, the choir received second prize in the folk song competition.

Áskell served as organist at Lögmannshlíðarkirkja from 1945 to 1987 — continuously for 42 years.
