Sigríður Laufey Sigurjónsdóttir
b. 1967
Sigríður has lived for most of her life in East Iceland, apart from a ten-year period when she lived in Grundarfjörður. She has been involved in musical activities in a variety of ways wherever she has lived, singing in choirs and vocal groups, accompanying singing in senior citizens’ community activities in Fljótsdalshérað, and providing music for services at her local church, Hjaltastaðarkirkja. Although she uses sheet music to some extent, she most often plays by ear.
Sigríður composed her first song at the age of thirteen, but did not begin composing seriously until she was around thirty. For six years she conducted the children’s choir of Egilsstaðir Church and composed music for the choir. These works included Christmas songs performed during Advent and the Christmas season, as well as hymns of praise sung at church services and ceremonies.
In 2008, six of Sigríður’s songs were released on the album Lífsins gangur by Sólveig Björnsdóttir. In 2016, Sigríður herself released an eleven-track CD entitled Laufey.
Most of the lyricists with whom Sigríður has collaborated are connected to East Iceland and are known in the region for the quality of their poetry. She has also worked with Einar Steinþórsson of Stykkishólmur. In addition, she has composed several songs to hymn texts from the Hymnal of the Icelandic Church.
A number of Sigríður’s lighter songs have been performed in concerts in East Iceland and elsewhere. Several of her hymns have also been selected for performance at church services and ceremonies.
