Sigurður Sævarsson - Composer of the Month
Sigurður Sævarsson (b. 1963) is one of Iceland’s most beloved composers. He has received particular acclaim for his choral music, which is performed regularly both in Iceland and abroad. Sigurður’s background is as both a composer and a singer, but he earned master’s degrees in both disciplines from Boston University in 1997. He serves as principal of Nýi Tónlistarskólinn in Reykjavík.
This collection consists of several of his most significant works. Many of them, Nunc dimittis (2015), Requiem (2016), and Ave verum corpus (2019), share a common origin in Sigurður’s long-standing and successful collaboration with the choir Schola Cantorum and its conductor, Hörður Áskelsson. Sigurður himself sang with the choir for many years.
